Wooster Wins Third Straight Gatorade Collegiate

DOVER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's golf team brought home the hardware to start the year for the third consecutive season, with the Fighting Scots' 586 beating out Mount Aloysius College by four strokes at the program's annual Gatorade Collegiate, held Saturday and Sunday at Zoar Village Golf Course.
Wooster picked right up from where it left off in the spring, when the Scots posted the program's lowest team scores since at least 1985 over the final two days of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships. Wooster opened with a 1-over-par 289 in round one of the Gatorade, then closed with a 297 on Sunday.
Junior Gabe Guthrie tied for runner-up honors with a 1-over-par 145. Guthrie was three back of the lead after round one, thanks to a roaring start to junior year. Guthrie eagled the par-5, 511-yard second hole, and got back to 2-under-par at the turn with a birdie on the par-4, 381-yard ninth hole. Consecutive birdies went in for Guthrie on the par-5, 495-yard 14th hole and the par-3, 167-yard 15th hole. In round two, Guthrie birdied No. 2 to get to 3-under-par for the tournament on that hole. The junior turned at 1-over-par and had two birdies on the back nine.
Sophomore Andrew Carey fired back-to-back 73s for a sixth-place score of 146. Carey's Saturday eagle came on the par-4, 340-yard 17th hole, and that moved the sophomore to 1-under-par on the back nine. It followed a birdie on the par-4, 388-yard 16th hole. On Sunday, Carey was even at the turn, with birdies coming on the par-3, 210-yard fourth hole and the par-5, 546-yard seventh hole. Overall, Carey carded six birdies on the weekend to go with the eagle.
Sophomore Jake Cammarata was in the hunt for medalist honors after a co-collegiate-best 71 in the opening round. Cammarata birdied three of the first four holes of sophomore year and returned to 3-under-par with a birdie on the par-5, 546-yard seventh hole. On Saturday's back nine, Cammarata carded eight straight pars. The sophomore was again solid down the stretch on Sunday with pars on 10 of the last 12 holes. Cammarata tied for 10th-place at 148.
Sophomore transfer Parker Bigornia debuted with a 1-over-par 73 and finished the tournament at 152, which was the 24th-place score. Bigornia went 1-under-par on Saturday's back nine, playing the final eight holes at 2-under-par. Birdies for Bigornia went in on the par-5, 544-yard 12th hole and the par-5, 495-yard 14th hole. The sophomore again birdied No. 12 on Sunday.
Senior Krish Nayak rounded out the lineup and tied for 32nd-place at 155. Nayak's closing 74 marked a seven-stroke bounce back from Saturday. On Sunday, Nayak started 2-under-par with birdies on the par-4, 409-yard opening hole and the par-5, 511-yard second hole. After turning at even par, Nayak moved back to 1-under-par with a birdie on No. 12.
First-year Rafa Tanjung led Wooster's B team and individuals with a sixth-place score of 146. Tanjung debuted with a 1-under-par 71, thanks to a strong closing stretch, that saw the first-year play holes 12-18 at 3-under-par. The final birdie for Tanjung dropped on the par-4, 340-yard 17th hole.
Junior Mark Towns played as an individual and was the other Scot in the field's top-10. Towns' 148 was fueling by a strong closing 73. The junior was 2-under-par through three holes on Sunday and made the turn at 1-under-par after getting birdie three of the day to go down on the par-4, 366-yard eighth hole.
The University of Mount Union's Brian Myers was the medalist with a 5-under-par 139.
Next, Wooster is at the Malone University Fall Invitational, held September 6-7 at Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance, Ohio.
