Scots Climb to Third on Final Day of Malone Invitational
Carey shoots 1-under-par
ALLIANCE, Ohio – Sophomore Andrew Carey spearheaded The College of Wooster men's golf team's seven-stroke bounce back with a 1-under-par 71 in the final round of the Malone University Fall Invitational, which took place the last two days at the par-72, 6,674-yard Tannenhauf Golf Club. Wooster finished in third-place at 613.
Carey tied for seventh-place at 148. The sophomore's 1-under-par 71 marked a collegiate-best and was carried by four birdies on the back nine. The sophomore moved to even par for the round with his fourth birdie of the day, which came at the par-3, 144-yard 15th hole. A fifth birdie dropped in on the par-4, 427-yard 17th hole, and Carey closed out the round with a par on the par-4, 419-yard 18th hole. In round one, Carey had three birdies and had a strong back nine, playing holes 13 through 17 at 1-under-par.
First-year Rafa Tanjung was next, placing 11th at 150. Tanjung was Wooster's low round on Friday, carding a 2-over-par 74. Tanjung played 14 holes at par or better on Friday and made consecutive birdies on Nos. 17 and 18. Earlier, Tanjung played holes two through eight at 1-under-par with six pars and a birdie on the par-4, 319-yard fifth hole. Tanjung followed the 74 up with a 76 and played both the front nine and back nine at 2-over-par on Saturday.
Junior Mark Towns tied for 21st-place after signing for a 76 and 80. Towns had a late birdie on the par-5, 524-yard 16th hole to get to 1-over-par on Friday's back nine. It was the junior's second circle of the day on the card. On Saturday, Towns excelled late, playing the final four holes of the back nine at 1-under-par. A birdie dropped in on the 18th hole to cap Towns' tournament.
Sophomore Jake Cammarata's 76 on Saturday tied for Wooster's second-best round of the day. Cammarata was super consistent, having three stretches of at least three straight pars. Cammarata's best run came late, as the round closed with five consecutive pars. Cammarata's 76 vaulted the sophomore up 14 spots on the leaderboard to a tie for 31st-place at 160.
Wooster's lineup was rounded out by first-year Nunth Khamkhokgruad. Khamkhokgruad placed 40th with a two-day 164. Khamkhokgruad's tournament started strong with a birdie on the par-5, 517-yard opening hole on Friday. Khamkhokgruad started both the front and back nines on Saturday with four straight pars.
Senior Krish Nayak led Wooster's B team with a 156. Nayak fired a 77 on Friday and followed that with a 79 on Saturday. Nayak was 1-under-par through four holes on Friday and played holes 11 through 16 at 1-under-par with a birdie and five pars.
West Liberty University, a NCAA Div. II program, won the five-team event with a 585. Walsh University's Kaleb Allen was the tournament medalist, shooting a 7-under-par 137.
Next, Wooster plays at the Westfield Insurance Companies Invitational, held September 13-14 at Westfield Country Club.
