Scots Tie For Sixth at 20-Team Region 5 Showcase

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's golf team tied for sixth-place at the 20-team NCAA Div. III Region 5 Showcase, which took place over the weekend at the par-72, 6,643-yard Manakiki Golf Course. Wooster shot a 307 in round one and closed with a 308.
First-year Rafa Tanjung led Wooster, tying for 13th-place at 151. Tanjung delivered a strong start to the tournament, firing a 1-over-par 37 on Manakiki's front nine on Saturday. The first-year had pars on eight of the holes and moved back to 1-over-par for the day with a birdie on the par-5, 504-yard 12th hole. Tanjung closed with an even-par 36 on Sunday's back nine to shoot 75 for the day. Tanjung birdied the par-5, 495-yard 13th hole and was 1-under-par on the back nine through seven holes in Sunday's round.
Junior Gabe Guthrie was next, tying for 23rd-place at 154. Guthrie was solid on the front nine, playing that stretch at 2-over-par for the tournament. The junior turned at even par on Sunday after playing holes three through nine at 2-under-par. Guthrie's birdies came on the par-5, 471-yard third hole and the par-3, 184-yard seventh hole. Guthrie carded a sixth birdie for the tournament, with that coming on the par-3, 205-yard 15th hole on Sunday.
Junior Mark Towns tied for 41st-place at 156. Towns was dialed in down the stretch on Saturday, draining four birdies on the back nine to sign for a 2-over-par 74. The four birdies came in a five-hole stretch and led to the junior scoring a 2-under-par for Saturday's back nine. Towns played 23 of the holes at par or better for the tournament.
Sophomore Jake Cammarata went 78-79 for a 157, which tied for 46th-place. The sophomore turned at 2-over-par on Saturday, thanks to seven pars on the front nine. In round two, Cammarata's highlights included a birdie on Nos. 3 and 13.
Sophomore Andrew Carey rounded out the lineup and shot a 161 to tie for 69th-place. Carey eagled back-to-back par-5 holes on Sunday, with those coming on the 504-yard 12th hole and the 495-yard 13th hole. Carey's tournament started with six straight pars and he went 3-under-par on No. 13 for the tournament after scoring a birdie on Saturday.
First-year Max Shulman led Wooster's individuals at the Region 5 Showcase, tying for 31st-place at 155. Shulman closed with a 77 on Sunday, with a 1-over-par 37 on the back nine leading the way. Shulman birdied Nos. 12 and 13 and carded a third birdie on the stretch on the par-4, 384-yard closing hole.
Wooster's B team competed at the University of Mount Union Fall Invitational. First-year Nunth Khamkhokgruad led Wooster there with the ninth-place score of 155.
Trine University won the Region 5 Showcase with a two-day 587. The University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg's Zachary Abdallah and Trine's Carter Schnipke tied for medalist honors at 1-under-par.
Next, Wooster concludes its fall season at the Wabash College Invitational, which takes place October 7-8 at Broadmoor Country Club. `
