Wooster Concludes Fall at Wabash Fall Invitational
Scots place sixth in 12-team field
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – The College of Wooster men's golf team capped its fall season at the Wabash College Fall Invitational, where the Fighting Scots placed sixth with a 54-hole score of 910.
Junior Gabe Guthrie was Wooster's top finisher, tying for 18th-place at 225. Guthrie concluded the fall with a 2-over-par 74 at the par-72, 6,904-yard Broadmoor Country Club on Tuesday. The junior carded four birdies in the round and was back to even par after the third dropped on the par-5, 509-yard 18th hole. Guthrie capped the shotgun-started round with a birdie on the par-4, 422-yard sixth hole. Guthrie started the tournament with another 2-over-par 74 on Monday. The junior eagled No. 18, and that followed a birdie on the par-5, 567-yard 17th hole. Four straight pars came after the birdie-eagle stretch, and Guthrie was at even par through 11 holes. They moved back to even par with a birdie on the par-4, 343-yard seventh hole. Guthrie signed for a 77 in round two and played the front nine at even par.
Classmate Mark Towns was next, tying for 27th-place with a three-round 229. Towns dominated on Tuesday's back nine, playing that stretch at 1-under-par. Towns played holes 14 through 18 at 3-under-par, netting birdies on the par-4, 423-yard 14th hole, the par-3, 163-yard 15th hole, and No. 18. Towns' tournament opened with an eagle on the par-5, 518-yard 12th hole, and the junior played the back nine in round one at 1-under-par. Towns' round two featured an even par front nine, thanks to a birdie on the par-5, 536-yard ninth hole.
First-year Rafa Tanjung was right behind Towns, tying for 31st-place with a 230. Tanjung fired a 76 in the fall finale, with birdies on the par-4, 414-yard second hole and No. 12 leading the way. The newcomer's best round was the opener, which was a 3-over-par 75. Tanjung logged pars on eight of the first nine holes played to turn from the back to the front at even par. A birdie dropped on the par-4, 343-yard seventh hole, and Tanjung played holes four through nine at 1-under-par in round one.
Sophomore Andrew Carey was next, finishing at 231. Carey tied for 35th-place. Carey ended strong, playing his final nine holes of the tournament at even par. Carey rolled in a birdie on No. 18 in round three, then proceeded to par five straight holes. Carey pared 15 of the holes en route to a round-two 76. The sophomore went 1-over-par on the front nine and had a run of 12 pars in a 13-hole stretch.
First-year Max Shulman rounded out the lineup and tied for 55th-place at 237. Shulman was the low Scot in round two with a 2-over-par 74. Shulman's round two started with a birdie on the par-4, 391-yard 13th hole, and the newcomer dropped back to even par come hole four, with a birdie on the 158-yard hole. He played 14 of the round-two holes at par or better.
Sophomore Jake Cammarata played as an individual and tied for 52nd-place at 236. Cammarata delivered a strong final round with a 3-over-par 75. The sophomore went 1-under-par on the back nine, sinking a birdie on No. 12 and carding par on the other eight holes. He was 1-under-par on the par-5 holes for the final round.
National power Illinois Wesleyan University ran away from the 12-team field, finishing at 10-under-par. Illinois Wesleyan's Griffin Pohl went 7-under-par to claim medalist honors.
