Wooster Opens Spring With Fifth-Place Finish
Cammarata, Tanjung lead Scots in spring lid-lifter
PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's golf team opened its spring season with a fifth-place showing at the Jimmy Hanlin Golf Classic, which took place Sunday and Monday at the par-71, 6,674-yard StoneWater Golf Club and the par-70, 6,623-yard Little Mountain Country Club. Wooster shot a 307 in round one and a 317 in round two for a 624.
Sophomore Jake Cammarata and first-year Rafa Tanjung both tied for 12th-place at 153. Cammarata opened with a 74 and closed with a 79. Tanjung went 75-78 for the tournament. Cammarata opened the spring with eight straight pars and made Sunday's turn at 1-over-par. He sank a birdie on the par-4, 319-yard 14th hole and played holes 13 through 18 at even par.
Tanjung ended Sunday's shotgun-started round strong, dropping in back-to-back birdies on the par-4, 445-yard second hole, and the par-3, 183-yard third hole, which were the first-year's final holes. The first of three birdies went down on the par-4, 371-yard eighth hole.
First-year Max Shulman and junior Mark Towns were next, tying for 25th-place at 158. Shulman carded consecutive 79s, while Towns went 81-77. Shulman had two birdies in Sunday's round, with those coming on No. 8 and the par-3, 186-yard 11th hole. Shulman's best stretch came at the start of the back nine, where he went 1-under-par spanning holes 10 through 14.
Towns' spring started with a birdie on the par-4, 362-yard fifth hole, which was the junior's opening hole on Sunday. Towns played 10 holes at par or better, including all three par-5 holes at StoneWater.
First-year Nunth Khamkhokgruad rounded out the lineup and tied for 37th-place at 162. Khamkhokgraud opened with a 79 and closed with an 83. The first-year was 1-under-par through three holes on Sunday, with the birdie going down on No. 5. Khamkhokgruad birdied back-to-back holes on Sunday's back nine, with the first coming at the near-600-yard 13th hole. The first-year was one of two Scots to birdie No. 14.
Sophomore Andrew Carey tied for 14th-place to lead Wooster's "B" team. Carey turned in a 2-over-par 73 at StoneWater. He went 1-under-par on the back nine, dropping in birdies on No. 14 and the par-5, 538-yard 18th hole.
Marietta College led the seven-team field with a 596. Capital University's Keegan Billngham was the medalist with a 4-over-par 147.

Next, Wooster hosts its annual Nye Intercollegiate, held this year April 13-14 at Wooster Country Club. Tee times on Sunday start at 10:30 a.m. Wooster will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of its NCAA Div. III national championship in men's golf this weekend.
