In a men's lacrosse defensive struggle Wednesday, The
College of Wooster emerged a 6-4 victor at Swarthmore College. It
marked the lowest scoring game Wooster has been involved in since
March 16, 2003, when the Fighting Scots took a 7-2 decision at
Haverford College.
On Wednesday, Wooster (3-1) had built a 4-1 lead early in the
second quarter and then Swarthmore (1-2) scored just 11 seconds
after the ensuing face-off to make it 4-2 at the 11:06 mark.
However, neither offense would score again until the Garnet made it
a one-goal game late in the third quarter, ending a combined
drought of 21:22.
Mark Weschler netted an unassisted tally to put the Scots back up
by two a few minutes later, only to see Swarthmore answer with a
goal with just :03 remaining in the quarter (5-4).
Weschler assisted on a Tim Lee goal 1:29 into the fourth, and that
turned out to be the final score, as the squads went scoreless the
final 13:31.
Alex Mies paced Wooster's offense with a goal and two
assists, Pat Coyne threw in two goals, and Lee and Weschler
finished with one goal and one helper apiece.
Headlining the Scots' defensive effort was freshman goalie
Corey McGann, who had 13 saves, including four in the fourth
quarter, and five groundballs, while nearly matching him was
Swarthmore's Kevin Friedenberg, who stopped 14 shots.
Wooster's East Coast spring break swing continues Saturday at
St. Mary's (Md.) College (1-3).
