WOOSTER, Ohio – Mark Weschler became the fifth player in
College of Wooster men's lacrosse history to score 100 career
goals on Wednesday, accomplishing the feat during a 17-2 thrashing
of Trine University at Carl Dale Memorial Field.
Weschler's milestone goal came at the 6:30 mark of the second
quarter, as he joins the likes of former Fighting Scot greats Tom
Bennett (162, 1990-93), Steve Davidow (155, 1988-91), Frank Windsor
(127, 1985-88), and Colin Hartnett (111, 2000-03).
As for the game itself, it took a full half for Wooster (2-0) to
pull away from upstart Trine (0-2), but once they did, the
Scots' scores came fast and furious. Leading 4-2 at the
halftime break, Wooster netted nine goals during the third, marking
the most in a quarter since it put up a 10-spot versus Cazenovia
College March 6, 2005.
Weschler ended up with five goals as well as an assist to lead all
scorers, and he already has 14 points on the young season. Pat
Coyne contributed a five-point day via two goals and three assists,
while Alex Mies and Matt Pullara each recorded two goals and two
assists.
Freshman Eric Johnson made the most of his first career action with
two goals during the fourth quarter. Also with multi-point outings
were Chris Gatsch and Joe Sulliman at one goal and one assist
apiece, and Graham Zimmerman tallied 10 groundballs and Pat Orr won
6-of-9 face-offs.
Defensively, the Scots' freshman goalie, Corey McGann, made
11 saves during his home debut before being pulled early in the
fourth.
Next, Wooster will hit the road for its annual East Coast swing
during spring break, starting with a tilt at Goucher College (2-1)
on Sunday afternoon.
