The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team got back on the
winning track Tuesday afternoon, overwhelming St. Vincent College
by a final count of 18-7 in a non-league affair played at Chuck
Noll Field in Latrobe, Pa.
With the victory, eighth-year Wooster head coach Jason Tarnow ties
Art Marangi for the most coaching wins in program history. Tarnow
is now 60-42, while Marangi went 60-67 from 1977-86.
A pair of goals by the Fighting Scots (4-4) within the opening five
minutes accounted for the lone scoring in the first quarter and
then they compiled a 4-1 run for a 6-1 advantage. St. Vincent (2-6)
finally countered with a pair of tallies, but Wooster answered each
time for an 8-3 halftime cushion.
The Bearcats did make things interesting in the third, pulling
within 8-5 at the 3:00 mark, only to see the Scots net two goals
over the final :39 of that quarter, which kickstarted a
game-clinching 7-0 run.
Fueling Wooster's 11-goal win was Alex Mies, who put a
career-high eight points into the scorebook coming on four goals
and four assists, while fellow attacker Mark Weschler pumped in
five goals for the third time this season. Pat Coyne contributed
his second two-goal, three-assist performance of the year and Matt
Pullara also played an integral role with three goals, one assist,
and 14-of-16 face-off wins.
The winning goalie was Corey McGann, credited with six saves before
being pulled midway through the fourth quarter, and also
noteworthy, Graham Zimmerman paced all players with five
groundballs.
The Scots, who have played eight games over a 32-day stretch since
opening the season, now have a full week off from competition
before hosting Adrian College (4-3) on April 8, at 4 p.m.
