St. Mary's College of Maryland outscored The College of
Wooster 6-2 during an extended stretch of the second half Saturday
afternoon, which allowed the Seahawks to pull away to a 12-7
non-conference men's lacrosse victory in St. Mary's
City, Md.
The game featured a series of runs. Wooster (3-2) scored the
initial goal 1:53 into the action and then St. Mary's (2-3)
reeled off three tallies in a row. The Fighting Scots responded
with a 3-0 run of their own, covering the close of the opening
quarter through 10 minutes of the second, to retake the lead at
4-3. The Seahawks came back with two unanswered to close the half
with a one-goal advantage of 5-4.
St. Mary's carried that momentum over into the third quarter,
finding openings for two early scores. Matt Pullara countered with
one of his four goals on the game during a man-up opportunity, but
Wooster could not cut into the deficit further. The Seahawks tacked
on two more for a decisive 4-1 third quarter and 9-5 lead.
Mark Weschler gave the Scots hope via an unassisted tally 2:23 into
the fourth, however, St. Mary's sealed the win with a couple
of goals midway through the period.
Pullara's four goals equaled a career high for the sophomore
midfielder and he also was credited with an assist for a five-point
day. Weschler scored twice but was held to just three shots, while
Tim Lee contributed a one-goal, one-assist effort.
Dennis Rosson matched Pullara's output to lead St.
Mary's.
In goal for Wooster was freshman Corey McGann, who made six saves,
while defender Ryan Story recorded a team-leading five groundballs
on the afternoon.
Next up for the Scots will be their stiffest test of the season, as
they travel to No. 3 ranked Stevenson University (6-0) on Tuesday
afternoon.
