WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster held off a late
rally by Adrian College Thursday afternoon, hanging on for a 10-9
triumph, which makes Jason Tarnow the school's all-time
winningest lacrosse coach as he gained the 61st victory of his
career. Tarnow, now 61-42 (.592) in eight seasons at Wooster,
passes Art Marangi, who coached the Fighting Scots to 60 wins from
1977-86 (60-67).
Thursday's outcome was not sealed until the final minute of
play, as Adrian stormed back from 8-3 and 10-6 deficits, the latter
coming with just 3:56 remaining, to make a game of it. The Bulldogs
scored three times during a 2:04 stretch to pull within 10-9 at the
1:28 mark, and then won the ensuing face-off. Adrian was unable to
get a tying shot off, though, committing a turnover instead and
Wooster freshman Nick Spittle collected the groundball. The Scots
successfully cleared it and then ran out the clock.
The teams were even at 3-3 midway through the second quarter when
Wooster (5-4) steadily began to take control. The Scots scored two
goals during the final 4:18 of the half and then three more to
start the third quarter for a five-goal bulge (8-3).
The Bulldogs (5-4) then made their first rally, scoring once near
the end of the third and two goals within the opening 1:07 of the
fourth quarter to make it a two-goal game of 8-6. Wooster's
Tim Lee countered with his second score of the day with 9:18 left
and Pat Coyne netted what turned out to be a very important
insurance goal at the 3:56 mark before Adrian's second big
rally.
The Scots controlled the majority of the action, outshooting the
Bulldogs 36-24, and the final score may not had been so close, if
it wasn't for three Wooster shots glancing off the pipe.
Adrian's advantage came in face-off situations, in which it
won 14 of 22.
Individually, Coyne had a hat trick to lead the Scots, Lee had two
goals, and the other five scores came from different individuals.
Mark Weschler, normally the team's top goal scorer, found
himself in a bit of a different role as he recorded three assists,
marking the second-highest total of his career. Noteworthy,
defender Bryan McDonald played a big part in the win with eight
groundballs.
The Bulldogs' Ryan Knautz scored a game-high four goals,
including three in the fourth quarter.
Wooster will play North Coast Athletic Conference contests the rest
of the regular season, starting with a trip to Oberlin College
(1-6, 0-2 NCAC) next Wednesday night.
