Visiting Kenyon turned a 3-2 lead just under five minutes into the second quarter into a 9-2 advantage nearing the end of the third period, and held off Wooster on its way to a 12-6 victory.
WOOSTER, Ohio – Visiting Kenyon College turned a 3-2 lead
just under five minutes into the second quarter into a 9-2
advantage nearing the end of the third period, and held off the
College of Wooster on its way to a 12-6 victory Saturday during
North Coast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action at a sunny
John P. Papp Stadium.
Despite Saturday's setback, Wooster concludes its season with a
7-6 overall record, marking the Fighting Scots' fourth consecutive
winning season under head coach Jason Tarnow.
Kenyon (8-6, 3-2 NCAC) scored the lone two goals, possessing a 2-0
lead after the first period. Wooster sliced the lead in half when
Alex Mies scored on an assist from Pat Coyne just 2:28 into the
second stanza. The Lords edged back out to a two-goal margin, but
again the Scots, who wound up 2-3 in NCAC action, closed to within
one during a man-up opportunity as Chris Gatsch tallied his 12th
goal of the campaign via Mies' team-best 19th helper.
Looking to even things up on the scoreboard, Kenyon's defense had
other ideas. The Lords had the hosts scoreless for nearly 24
minutes of action. During that span, six different Kenyon players
recorded a goal, and the visitors held on for the six-goal
victory.
Gatsch added a second goal near the halfway point of the fourth
quarter for Wooster, while Mies, who was credited with three
assists on the afternoon, Coyne, Mark Weschler, and Casey McGann
each added a single tally for the Scots.
Via his 29 goals and 12 assists this spring, Weschler finishes his
career with 175 points on 122 goals and 53 assists. His 122 goals
place him fourth in the Wooster career laurels, while his 175
points rank him sixth, and 53 assists tie him for eighth.
For Kenyon, Brett Fuller, Devin Caitlin, and David Clarke all had
good offensive outputs. Fuller finished with a hat trick, while
Caitlin and Clarke each scored two goals to go along with an
assist. Dominique McKoy and Geoff Akie both chipped in with two
goals, respectively.
Defensively, Corey McGann tallied eight saves for Wooster, while
the Lords' David Page helped preserve his squad's win with 10
stops.
