The College of Wooster coasted past host Oberlin College 16-6 in
North Coast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action
Thursday under the lights at Fred Shults Field.
Coyne's big day began with an assist on the game's
first score 1:37 into the action and also included two first-half
goals, however, Wooster (6-4, 1-1 NCAC) found itself ahead of
Oberlin (1-8, 0-4 NCAC) by just 6-4 at the halftime break.
It remained a two-score margin until around the midway point of the
third quarter, when the Fighting Scots suddenly broke it wide open.
Over a 6:50 stretch, they exploded for seven unanswered goals,
including three in a row for Coyne from the 6:29 to the 3:39 marks.
Also of note, Dan MacVarish scored once and assisted on three
during that critical stretch.
With Wooster leading 13-4, the fourth quarter became a mere
formality as the Scots eventually sewed up the 10-goal victory.
Coyne, a junior midfielder who had recorded the third hat trick of
his career in the team's previous game, netted the six goals
on 13 shots and he also collected three groundballs. MacVarish,
another junior, also finished with a career-high as he totaled up
five points on two goals and three assists.
Also for the Scots, Tim Lee and Mark Weschler contributed
three-point outings and Chris Gatsch matched Lee's goal tally
of two. Weschler had one goal and two assists.
Wooster net-minder Corey McGann made 11 saves, including eight in
the first half, before being pulled for the last six minutes of
action.
The schedule continues for the Scots next Saturday when they host
Wittenberg University (7-3, 1-2 NCAC) at 1 p.m.
