Scots’ NCAC Title Chances Slip Away in Second Half at Wittenberg

In a game with North Coast Athletic Conference championship implications, it was WittenbergWittenberg University coming up with the key run as the host Tigers broke a 3-3 halftime tie with The College of Wooster by tallying eight unanswered goals en route to an 11-4 victory Saturday afternoon at Springfield, Ohio.

Wooster (8-6, 2-2 NCAC) had hopes of creating a tie for first-place in the league standings and started well with the lone goal of the first quarter, courtesy of Matt Pullara. The Fighting Scots also outshot Wittenberg (9-3, 4-0 NCAC) by a 10-3 margin that period.

The Tigers, who sewed up at least a share of their first-ever NCAC championship in men's lacrosse, scored three times in the opening four minutes of the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead. Pullara, though, continued to be a one-man wrecking crew for Wooster, tying it up with a pair of unassisted tallies late in the half.

It was all Wittenberg, though, in the second. The Tigers scored five times in the third quarter, including two within the opening 4:32, and had another two early goals in the fourth to all but put it away.

In addition to Pullara's hat trick, Pat Coyne contributed one late goal to the Scots' cause, while goalkeeper Corey McGann was also a bright spot with 13 saves.

Wooster takes to the field again Sunday when it hosts Whittier College (8-6) at noon.
