Scots Use 6-1 Scoring Run to Topple Mount St. Joseph

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team took a 3-3 tie into the second quarter, but a sudden 6-1 scoring run that continued through the third stanza broke the game open, allowing the Fighting Scots to notch a 12-7 win over College of Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday night at John P. Papp Stadium.

The Scots (5-4) erased an early one-goal deficit with scores from Matt Pullara and Alex Mies to take a 2-1 lead about six minutes into the action. Neither team scored again until the Lions (2-7) put two more shots in the net during a one-minute span to go up 3-2 with 2:55 remaining in the quarter.

During the final minute of the first, Dan MacVarish scored on a feed from Alex Mies that tied the game at three and sparked Wooster's scoring run. The Scots opened the second quarter with a quick unassisted goal from Casey McGann, and then later McGann scored again on a Mies assist to put Wooster ahead 5-3.

The Lions snuck in a goal before the break, but Pat Coyne came out in the third and scored three-consecutive goals to push Wooster's lead to 8-4. Mount St. Joseph then crept back into the game midway through the fourth, getting as close as 10-7 after a goal by Taylor Samuel with 5:07 to go in the contest, but Matt Pullara won the ensuing face-off, scooped the ground ball, and drove to the net and scored just 10 seconds later to cool the Lions' comeback bid.

Wooster was led by a trio of top scorers, including Coyne, who beat the keeper four times to bring his season total to a team-best 22 goals. Mies added two goals and three assists, and McGann recorded a hat trick with three goals and one helper.

Goalkeeper Corey McGann had a solid outing in goal, posting 10 saves, with seven coming in the second half when the Lions almost doubled their shot attempts from the first two quarters.

The Scots will look to increase their current win streak to four games when they visit Trine University (3-3) next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
