Trine Has No Answer For Wooster's Sudden 10-0 Run

The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team turned a quiet game into an explosion by scoring 10 unanswered goals, which turned a 1-1 second quarter tie into an 11-1 third quarter cushion, and an eventual 13-3 route over Trine University on Tuesday at Angola, Ind.

The Scots (6-4) scored the game's initial goal when Matt Pullara put a shot in the net just 2:22 into the action. Just moments later the Thunder (3-4) answered back with a Blaine Stahley goal that tied the game at 1-1, but then both teams experienced a cold spell that lasted the entire opening stanza.

That changed early in the second quarter, as Alex Mies scored to put Wooster on top 2-1 and started an offensive onslaught that saw Wooster score 10 goals over the next 23 minutes. Eric Johnson, Dan MacVarish, and Casey McGann all chipped in goals during the second, and Mies and Pullara each scored over a 5.0 second span to start the third which sparked a six-goal quarter.

Wooster locked in on defense and only took five shots during the fourth quarter, but Steve Crozier and Matt Rubin managed to add goals in the closing minutes. Trine's Stahley scored in the final seconds, his third of the game, but was the only bright spot in a game which the Thunder was outshot 35-21 and more than doubled the Scots' turnovers (18-8).

Offensively, McGann and Pullara recorded hat tricks, and Mies and MacVarish added two goals apiece. In the net, goalkeeper Corey McGann made five saves and allowed just three goals in a full 60 minutes of work.

Wooster will be busy this weekend as it hosts both Albion College (1-5) on Friday at 6 p.m., and Colorado College (5-1) on Sunday at noon.
