Following his senior season with The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team, Matt Pullara has been named a Scholar All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, the organization announced Thursday.
Pullara has been a standout on the lacrosse field and in the classroom as a student-athlete at Wooster. Last month, he earned his third consecutive all-North Coast Athletic Conference accolade (honorable mention in 2009, second-team in 2010, first-team in 2011), after he led the Fighting Scots by recording 24 points (15 goals, 9 assists). He also ranked among the top-50 in NCAA Div. III in face-off percentage for the third time, winning almost 60 percent (58.7) of his attempts. For his career, Pullara totaled 105 points (76 goals, 29 assists).
In the classroom, Pullara was equally impressive, as he graduated cum laude with a 3.64 grade-point average as a psychology major and business economics minor. At commencement, Pullara was awarded with one of Wooster's most prestigious academic honors, the William A. Galpin Award for General Excellence in College Work. Pullara was one of just two male students to receive the award, which is presented on the basis of scholarship, social and religious leadership, and proficiency in vigorous physical pursuits. He also was a recipient of the David A. Guldin Award.
Also noteworthy, Pullara is the founder and president of the Brochet Society, which is a group of men that crochet hats and scarves and then donate them to three area agencies, and he has volunteered at the Boy's and Girl's Club.
The USILA Scholar All-American Program was established in 1989, and recognizes student-athletes who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically, and as citizens of their communities. Pullara was one of 40 student-athletes chosen in NCAA Div. III this year (78 total in all NCAA divisions).
