WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster was too much for Bethany (W. Va.) College and its second-year varsity lacrosse program on Wednesday, as the Fighting Scots scored a 19-1 decision that was actually stopped short due to a second lightning delay at John P. Papp Stadium.

Leading 1-0 through five minutes, Wooster (2-0) then kicked it into gear with five more goals during the first quarter, including a hat trick by Matt Ranck.

The second period played out somewhat similarly, with no scoring and then a Scot flurry as the hosts netted four scores, two more courtesy of Ranck, the final 4:07 in taking a 10-1 cushion into halftime. Two of the goals were scored a mere six seconds apart.

Two Tom Herold goals increased Wooster's advantage to 11 before lightning as well as heavy rain descended on the area at the 5:12 mark of the third. A 48-minute delayed ensued, then the Scots picked up right where they left off as they tacked on three additional scores to close the quarter ahead 15-1.

Seven seconds into the fourth quarter, face-off specialist Max Rubin came down and scored, and Wooster added three more before lightning stopped play again, ultimately ending the game with 4:43 still on the clock.

Ranck, a junior with 14 career goals entering Wednesday, scored six times in all, while freshman Jesse Fernandez also recorded a hat trick. Ten Scots scored in all, Steve Crozier paced the team in assists with two, and Rubin was credited with 15 face-off wins in 19 attempts.

Next, Wooster hits the road for the first time this season as it will be at Aurora University (1-0) on Saturday afternoon.
