After Strong Start, Wooster Falls to Kenyon 11-5
Scots hold Lords scoreless for over 14 minutes to start game
The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team controlled the action in the first period, but Kenyon College responded with a 9-1 scoring run and ultimately dropped the Fighting Scots 11-5 in both teams' regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Gambier, Ohio.
The Scots (6-9, 1-4 NCAC) scored the game's opening two goals, as Patrick Schlick converted a PJ Dallman assist 4:45 into the action, and later, Tom Herold made it 2-0 with just 1:36 remaining in the stanza.
After holding the Lords (10-4, 4-1 NCAC) scoreless for over 14 minutes to start the contest, Caleb Florence beat the 'keeper at the tail end of the first period, which ignited a dominant scoring run.
Kenyon rifled in the first three goals of the second period, until Matt Ranck interrupted the spurt to keep Wooster within one score (4-3) at halftime. The third quarter was all Kenyon, though, as the Lords steadily added five unanswered goals to take a commanding 9-3 lead and put the game out of reach.
Ranck added a pair of goals in the fourth, giving him a hat trick on the day, and pushing his season total to 45. Schlick and Herold contributed the Scots' other scores, while Dallman, Eric Johnson, and Herold picked up assists in the setback.
On the stat sheet, Wooster went 7-for-20 on face-offs, and tied Kenyon with 30 ground balls apiece, but the Lords nearly doubled the Scots' shot attempts (50-26).
Goalkeeper Matt Magoon made 13 saves, and Dean Marchitelli totaled a game-high six ground balls.
