Scots Fall at No. 19 Denison in Regular Season Finale
Henderson notches hat trick to finish with team-high 34 goals
Playing against its second nationally-ranked opponent in a row, The College of Wooster wasn't able to keep pace with No. 19 Denison University, as the Big Red took down the Fighting Scots, 18-7, on Monday evening in a continuation of a game that was postponed due to lightning.
The Scots (9-7, 3-5 NCAC) and Big Red (12-3, 7-1 NCAC) originally met back on April 8, but severe weather forced officials to halt the action late in the first quarter. The game resumed today, with Denison carrying over its previous 6-2 lead, which it added to in a hurry.
The Big Red used a four-goal second quarter to increase their advantage to 10-2 at the break, and then added two more tallies early in the third quarter to build a 12-2 cushion.
Pat Henderson, who scored during the first portion of the game earlier this month, added his second goal of the contest to stop Denison's scoring run and cut it to a nine-goal deficit (12-3).
The hosts went right back to work, scoring the last four goals of the third quarter to build an insurmountable 16-3 lead.
Wooster made some noise in the fourth, as Henderson finished off a hat trick, Ian Brim and Josh Herold beat the goalkeeper on assists from Matt Parmelee, and then Parmelee pumped in his own goal, helping the Scots outscore Denison 4-2 in the final stanza.
Along with the well-played fourth quarter, another positive was Wooster matching Denison in face-offs, 14-14, with standout Max Rubin winning 13 of them. Rubin also scooped up a game-high nine groundballs.
Henderson's three goals come as part of a late-season surge that saw him score 20 goals over the last five games on his way to capturing the team lead with 34 this spring.
Goalkeeper Ben Grombala made a game-high seven saves over his 45:39 of work, while newcomer Tyler Lacroix also got some valuable experience (14:21) against a top-flight offense.
Despite the setback, Wooster finishes with a 9-7 record – its third consecutive winning season.
