Scots Fall in Season Opener

Joe Altieri scored two of Wooster's three goals Saturday as the Scots fell to St. John Fisher 20-3.

The College of Wooster men's lacrosse season and home opener did not go their way on Saturday as they suffered a 20-3 defeat to St. John Fisher College.

First-year Ian Evans and sophomore Joe Post were dominating in their respective positions for the Cardinals. Evans finished with five goals and two assists, while Post went 19-for-24 on faceoffs. Nicholas Miller was also a strong presence, finishing with four goals and three assists.

Wooster senior Joe Altieri scored twice to lead the Scots. Altieri gave Wooster its first goal with 7:32 remaining in the first period to bring them to within one early on. Altieri then scored to open the second period as Wooster trailed 5-3 at that point.

First-year Drake Nickolaison scored Wooster's other goal, his first goal as a Scot, thanks to an assist from Shaun Peirce with 4:33 left in the first period.

Unfortunately, St. John Fisher would score four unanswered to go into halftime leading 9-3. A 7-0 third period distanced the Cardinals from the Scots as they shutout Wooster for the entire second half.

Goalkeeper Wesley Wagner made 15 saves while taking the loss. Darin Eakins made nine saves for the win for the Cardinals.

St. John Fisher collected 37 groundballs to Wooster's 24. Peirce had a team-high five groundballs for the Scots.

The Scots were outshot 52-36 and both teams committed 17 turnovers.

This was both teams' season openers as Wooster will take a 0-1 record when they host Otterbein University next Friday.
