Wooster Stays Perfect in Conference Play

Charlie Ballou, Wooster Lacrosse WOOSTER, Ohio – Sophomore Paul Chandler was exceptional in goal again with his second 20-save performance of the season, and The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team was very efficient on offense, scoring on nearly 36 percent of its shots in Sunday afternoon's 10-8 win over DePauw University at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (4-5, 2-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) was nearly doubled up on shots by DePauw (1-8, 0-2 NCAC), but the Fighting Scots made their 28 count. Three fired off by first-year Will Fink found the back of the net, as did two each from sophomores Charlie Ballou and Ben Byars, plus senior Ben Kennedy.

Two 3-0 runs were the cushion the Scots needed. Kennedy book-ended the first, which came in the second period. Ballou had the score sandwiched in between Kennedy's and he assisted on the senior's player-up goal that upped Wooster's lead to 6-4 with 1:14 before halftime. Fink had the book-ender in the second half, and once again Ballou tucked in a goal in between, this time with a player-down strike.

In addition to the pair of 3-0 runs, a key player-up and player-down stretch helped clinch the game for Wooster. Offensively, sophomore Ben Huntington found Byars from behind the goal with 1:19 remaining, and that score made it 10-8. Defensively, Wooster overcame a two-minute illegal body check penalty that occurred with 8:05 to go in the game. Sophomore Mitch Shelman, playing as Wooster's fourth long-pole on the player-down, scooped up a groundball after a DePauw shot by Danny Karbowski was blocked on its way towards the goal. Junior Tucker Joseph had another groundball after the clear nearly went awry. After DePauw gained possession back in its own end, the Tigers' Quinn Cashion turned the ball over, and the Scots were able to ride out the rest of the penalty time relatively uncontested.

Fourteen of Chandler's 21 saves came in periods two and three. In fact, a dozen of the 14 came when the score was tied or a team was ahead by a single score. Sophomore Casey Steffen supplemented Chandler's saves with four groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Henry White scored three times for the Tigers, while Jack Kneisley and Matthew Roman combined to go 13-of-22 on faceoffs. Charlie Rodriguez had seven of DePauw's 41 groundballs and three of the 14 caused turnovers.

DePauw finished with 52 shots on the afternoon.

Next, Wooster's at No. 20 Denison University (6-4, 2-0 NCAC) on Saturday, April 9. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
