Wooster Dealt First Conference Loss at Denison

Ben Byars, Wooster Lacrosse GRANVILLE, Ohio – North Coast Athletic Conference power Denison University handed The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team its first league loss, as the Big Red topped the Fighting Scots 16-5 on Saturday afternoon at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

Sophomore Paul Chandler held his own against the Big Red's (7-4, 3-0 NCAC) powerful offense, as despite allowing 16 goals, Wooster's (4-6, 2-1 NCAC) goalkeeper had a near-60-percent save clip, with 22 saves. Chandler now has three 20-save games this year, including the last two outings. Of note, the sophomore's 22 stops were two off a career-high.

Denison scored the first seven goals before first-year Will Fink found sophomore Ben Byars, who put the Wooster on the board at the 12:57 mark of the second. Byars went on to lead the Scots with three points on two goals and an assist, and classmate Charlie Ballou scored a pair of goals too.

Sophomore Mason Poisson caused a pair of turnovers and had two of the Scots' 15 groundballs.

Four players had three goals for Denison, including Camden Bowdy, who had seven points, thanks to four assists. Davis Cronin was a perfect 11-for-11 on faceoffs, and overall, the Big Red were 21-of-23. Denison's Luke Fisher had a game-high six groundballs.

Denison outshot Wooster 62-20, and the Big Red scooped up 44 groundballs. Denison went 19-for-19 on clear attempts, while Wooster was a respectable 24-of-31.

Wooster has another tall order on hand next, as Ohio Wesleyan University (6-3, 3-0) is headed up to John P. Papp Stadium for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday, April 12.
