Scots Run Record to 6-0
Wooster one of three teams at 6-0 and better in Div. III
WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team joined an exclusive club that consists of just three members currently after turning aside former conference foe Allegheny College 9-6 on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium. With its win, Wooster is now 6-0 on the year and joined Christopher Newport University and Pfeiffer University as the lone NCAA Div. III teams at 6-0 or better in 2023.
Allegheny (2-3) could not penetrate Wooster's defense in the first half, and in fact, the Gators did not find the scoreboard until Jack Cushwa broke up the shutout bid with 8:35 left in the third period. At that point, Wooster's lead was 5-0 on the strength of first-period goals by junior Shane Epstein-Petrullo, sophomore Colton Beaudoin, and junior Ben Byars. Beaudoin tacked on goal two of the afternoon in the second period and junior Vinny DiLeo scored in the third before Cushwa's tally.
Balance, depth, and a plethora of Fighting Scots making a mark on the stat sheet were evident in Saturday's win. Eight Scots scored a point with first-year Lane Kellogg's four on two goals and two assists leading the way. DiLeo led the way with eight groundballs. That was followed by sophomore Aidan Hyatt and junior Casey Steffen at five each, while 21 Scots in all contributed to team's haul of 51. DiLeo, junior Oliver Snow, and Steffen combined for nine of Wooster's 21 caused turnovers, and eight other Scots got in on that stat column on the afternoon. Junior Paul Chandler made six saves before sophomore Jason Astle took over midway through the third period.
Nick Gralewski scored two goals and passed out an assist to lead Allegheny's offense. Cassady Bouthet caused three turnovers and JP Rakis had four groundballs credited on the stat sheet.
Wooster more than doubled up Allegheny 45-20 on shots, had 51 groundballs to the Gators' 34, and was 21-of-26 on clears compared to a 50 percent showing for the guests at 17-of-34.
Wooster last had a winning streak of at least six games in 2015.
Next, Wooster is off to Colorado College for a pair of games, starting with a 5 p.m. ET/3 p.m. MT contest against Southwestern University (5-2) on Friday, March 17.
