LATROBE, PA – Despite trailing early, The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team picked up a 12-9 season opening win at Saint Vincent College on Saturday.
Saint Vincent (0-2) struck first, leading 2-0 after about six minutes of play. However, Wooster kicked into gear on the ensuing faceoff, which Wooster won off the groundball pickup from Owen Bosland.
He found Lane Kellogg, who drove the ball downfield and assisted Rowan Piani for Wooster's first score of the year.
Wooster (1-0) later tied it at 2-2 with 4:41 left in the first quarter on a laser of a shot from Rory Zahren. Before the quarter could end Wooster would not only take the lead but expand on it on back-to-back goals from Will Fink and John Allen Ginder.
Wooster scored five straight, thanks to another goal from Austin Jourde, before Saint Vincent got back in the scoring column at the 11:35 mark in the second quarter. However, Wooster scored three more times before the end of the half behind goals from Jourde, John Lloyd and Kellogg.
Wooster kept Saint Vincent off the board for the rest of the quarter for the Scots to lead 8-3 at halftime.
The third played even as Wooster led 10-5 after three periods before holding off the Bearcats for the victory in the fourth behind another two goals from Kellogg.
Kellogg tied for a game-high three goals along with Saint Vincent's Carter Haid.
Jourde, Piani, Allen Ginder all finished with two scores.
First-year Case Lowery made 12 saves in his first start.
