Wooster Pulls Away From Albion, 12-6
Holub, Crane net first collegiate goals
WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team doubled up on Albion College for a 12-6 non-conference win on Faculty Appreciation Day inside John P. Papp Stadium.
A pair of Wooster (2-2) first-years in Jack Holub and Will Crane both netted their first collegiate goals. Holub had a solid overall performance with a team-leading four goals, team-high tying six groundballs and one caused turnover while Crane scored twice. Senior Austin Jourde helped get the offense started, assisting on the Fighting Scots first two goals of the game and also scored a goal.
Defensively, two other Scots joined Holub with six groundballs - senior Rory Zahren and junior Sutton Ursillo. Ursillo also added a pair of caused turnovers but first-year Jude Harris had the team-high in caused turnovers with four.
Albion (3-3) was led by junior Cal Stearns with three goals and one assist, while first-year Luke Schuemann had a pair of scores. The Britons' defensive leader was senior Will Tession with five groundballs and a game-high five caused turnovers.
Senior Will Fink kickstarted Wooster's 6-0 run that spanned almost 20 minutes of action between the third and fourth periods. Highlights included two of Holub's four goals. Stearns put an end to the run for the Britons, but that proved to be the last score of the game and too little too late for Albion.
First-year Case Lowery notched his second career win in the cage with seven saves. Senior Jason Astle made his first appearance on the season and recorded one save in 6:52 of action. Sophomore Caleb Howell took the loss for the Britons, but made six stops. Senior Jack Erickson also saw action and tallied two saves.
Albion and Wooster were evenly matched in saves with eight, faceoffs won with 11-of-22 and turnovers with 26. The Britons had their transition game clicking with 22-of-24 successful clears, while the Scots were not as successful, completing only 15-of-29 clears. Wooster had the distinct advantage in groundballs (44-35) and shots (39-31).
Wooster hits the road for a two-game stretch, beginning with a matchup against Westminster College (Pa.) on Wednesday, March 12, at 7 p.m. at the UPMC Sports Complex.
