ELMHURST, Illinois – The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team dropped its spring break opener at Elmhurst University 14-8 on Saturday afternoon.
Wooster (3-3) was within five twice in the fourth period. Senior Renick Wiltshire's goal with 14:07 to go made it a 10-5 game. First-year Domenic Cuda capped the high-scoring start to the fourth with a goal that made it 12-7. Cuda's goal was the fifth combined score in the opening 2:35 of the period and it came off a faceoff. Cuda played as one of Wooster's wings and collected the groundball following sophomore John Allen Ginder's second goal of the game.
Elmhurst (7-0) rode Eli Spence's eight-goal afternoon to the victory. Four of Spence's goals came during the Blue Jays' 8-1 stretch that spanned the 7:11 mark of the first period to the 3:37 point of the third. Junior Lane Kelloggbroke up the 8-1 run with a goal with 2:39 to go in the third.
Ginder and Kellogg both scored two goals for Wooster. First-year Case Lowery stopped 13 Blue Jay shots on the afternoon. Twenty Wooster players had a groundball in the game, with first-year Jack Holub leading the team with three.
Faceoffs were a key difference in the game, as Elmhurst won 19-of-26, led by Tony Vazquez's 19-of-24 outing. Vazquez scooped up 13 groundballs. Noah Mickelson was superb in goal, stopping 15 Wooster shots. Gabe Henry led the backline with three caused turnovers.
Elmhurst had 45 shots to Wooster's 38 and was 23-of-27 on clears. Wooster was credited with 26 successful clears on 26 attempts.
Next, Wooster plays Messiah University (6-7) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19. The game is taking place at the Kiski School in Pennsylvania.
