Comeback Bid Falls Short for Wooster at Oberlin
Scots fall in final minute, 12-11
Despite a quick start in the opening frame which saw three goals in less than five minutes of action, the Scots' (4-5, 1-1 NCAC) offense lapsed in the second and third quarters, resulting in Wooster trailing 11-7 at the start of the final period. Sophomore John Allen Ginder got the comeback started with an unassisted second-chance goal at the 11:29 mark. Wooster won the ensuing faceoff after it banged around the field for a little while and senior Will Fink found the back of the net less than a minute later. Ginder scored his second of the afternoon to bring the Scots back within one goal and, following a sequence of turnovers, Fink found sophomore Jesse Fisher for the game-tying score with 6:34 left on the clock.
Oberlin (7-2, 1-1 NCAC) won the faceoff and had its fair share of scoring opportunities but kept sending the ball wide of the net. Wooster finally got its chance after forcing a key turnover with a couple minutes left on the clock. Following a timeout, junior Lane Kellogg had the best look but hit the crossbar. Fink got a second-chance look but sent it wide. The Scots eventually turned the ball over leading to Oberlin moving down the field and scoring the game-winning goal with 31 seconds left.
The Yeomen won the faceoff on a violation and were all set up to just pass the ball around until triple zeroes on the clock but they committed a crucial turnover with around 15 seconds left. Wooster could not quite move the ball quickly and cleanly up the field to get a last-second shot off as Oberlin held on for the one-goal win.
Fink was the Scots' leading scorer with three goals and two assists. Kellogg had a hat trick as well, while senior Austin Jourde had one goal and one assist. Junior Sutton Ursillo was all over the defensive half of the field with a season-high eight groundballs and caused three turnovers.
Oberlin was led by junior Soloman Brennan with four goals and two assists. Junior Jacob Starcke matched Brennan's number with four goals. First-year Evan Sardina was a nightmare faceoff matchup for the Scots, winning 18-of-25 with 11 groundballs.
First-year Case Lowery made six saves in the loss. Junior Jake Pillsbury picked up the win for the Yeomen and made three stops in the process.
Wooster concludes non-conference action with a neutral-site game against Colorado College (6-4) on Saturday, April 5, at noon at Worthington Kilbourne High School in Columbus.
