Scots Hold Off Colorado College, 11-9
Wooster's 5-0 run in second half the key difference
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team held off Colorado College for an 11-9 victory, concluding non-conference action in a neutral site game held at Worthington Kilbourne High School on Saturday.
The first half proved to be a little bit of a back-and-forth affair. Despite the Tigers (6-5) jumping on the scoreboard first, the Fighting Scots (5-5) led 3-1 at the end of the first period. The second quarter was evenly matched with two goals on each side, highlighted by player-up scores by each team.
Colorado College took the lead with 5:36 remaining in the third period. The lead did not last long, as junior Lane Kellogg tied the game again with 42 seconds left on the quarter clock. Kellog's goal had the Scots off and running on a 5-0 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters. Both Kellogg and first-year Jack Holub scored twice as part of that run.
The Tigers put together their best attempt at a comeback, scoring three of the game's final four goals, but an unassisted goal from Wooster senior Riley Schulze with 7:20 remaining really helped ice the game for the Scots.
A pair of first-years stood out on both ends of the field for the Scots. Domenic Cuda had a breakout defensive performance with a game- and career-high 13 groundballs. He also added two caused turnovers. Meanwhile, Holub led the offensive attack with a season-high-tying four goals. Kellogg and Rowan Piani helped provide a balanced offense alongside Holub. Kellogg had a hat trick plus two assists and Piani chipped in two goals and two assists as well. Junior Sutton Ursillo anchored the defense alongside Cuda with seven groundballs and a game-high three caused turnovers.
Most of Colorado College's offense came from first-year Max Vota and sophomore Matt Hudson who had identical scoring lines of two goals and two assists. Standout faceoff specialist Trevor Mackles won 10-of-14 faceoffs and scooped a team-high six groundballs. Sophomore Jake Moshang led the defensive effort, tying Ursillo with three caused turnovers.
In the cage, first-year Case Lowery made eight saves in the win. First-year counterpart Jackson Lesher made 10 stops in the loss for the Tigers.
Each team shone in their respective rights. Colorado College dominated the faceoffs, winning 17 to Wooster's six, and also took more shots at 43-38. Wooster's advantages came in the form of 11 fewer turnovers and seven more groundballs.
Wooster (1-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) resumes NCAC action on Wednesday, April 9, against Hiram College (3-9, 0-3 NCAC) for Band Night at John P. Papp Stadium. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
