Regionally-Ranked Case Edges Wooster in OT

WOOSTER, Ohio – Case Western Reserve University's Vinny Bell scored a breakaway goal midway through the first overtime period of Tuesday's non-conference men's soccer tilt, giving the regionally-ranked Spartans a 2-1 comeback victory over The College of Wooster at Carl Dale Memorial Field.

Wooster (4-4-1) had led 1-0 via freshman Erik Beuck's first collegiate goal at the end of the first half. During a scramble right in front of the net in the 42nd minute, junior Justin Younker knocked the ball over to Beuck, who finished the scoring chance. It also marked Younker's first career point.

The Fighting Scots had two good looks to extend their lead early in the second half. A hard shot by Scott Buckwald from the left side was saved at the near post, and moments later, Chris DeMoll's run into the box resulted in the goalkeeper slipping out of position, but DeMoll, still being pressured by a defender, went wide with his attempt.

Case Western Reserve (6-2), rated No. 9 in this week's NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Region poll, took advantage of an opportunity in the 56th minute when Wooster was whistled for a handball in the box. The Spartans' R.J. French converted the ensuing penalty kick, going to the lower right for a goal.

Both offenses continued to put together some quality looks, including the Scots' Chase Beach and Nate Florian narrowly missing shots over the final 10 minutes of regulation.

In overtime, Wooster held possession early, but couldn't get off any attempts at the goal. Then, Case produced a couple of shots, with both being stopped by 'keeper Taylor Takacs.

The Scots' backfield, though, couldn't successfully clear the ball, as Bell came away with the ball, split a couple of defenders at the upper right corner of the box, and slid the game-winner left into the side netting.

Takacs played admirably in the loss, recording five saves – all coming after halftime and several on diving stops. The Spartans' Konrad Karasek also was credited with five stops.

Wooster will look to bounce back on Saturday with a North Coast Athletic Conference contest at Kenyon College (5-3-1, 0-0-0 NCAC) at 3:30 p.m.
