WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster and visiting
Marietta College tied 1-1 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference
men's soccer affair at Carl Dale Memorial Field. It was the
Fighting Scots' home opener for 2008.
Neither team scored during a first half that saw very few quality
scoring opportunities, but the action heated up throughout the
second. Marietta struck first when, in the 74th minute, Kyle
Blakenship was deep in Wooster territory and crossed a pass from
the right side to the upper left of the box where Jack Dunn
delivered a shot back to the right side of the net for a goal.
It did not remain 1-0 very long. Just 3:33 later, the Pioneers'
goalkeeper caught the ball a step outside the box, deliberately
preventing a scoring chance, and was issued a red card. The Scots'
Karl Ruter stepped up for the free kick and neatly hooked the ball
over the Marietta wall and into the upper right side of the net,
marking the junior's 12th career goal.
Wooster, though, was unable to take advantage of playing a man-up
for the final 13:22 of regulation or in either overtime, as the
Scots had to settle for the tie.
Defensively, Wooster utilized two 'keepers. Freshman Taylor Takacs
played the first half and both overtimes, while sophomore Patryk Tenorio handled the duty during the second half. Both were credited
with two saves on the afternoon.
The Scots are home again Saturday afternoon, as they host Defiance
College (0-2) at 3:30 p.m.
