Scots Fall Short, Lose 2-1 in Overtime to Marietta

Austin Russell

The College of Wooster men's soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to Marietta College as the Fighting Scots' season-opening six-game road swing came to an end on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pioneers (3-2-1) nearly got on the board in the 39th minute after a mistimed Wooster clearance left Alex Gruss with a shot opportunity inside the six-yard-box, but Wooster (2-3-1) goalkeeper Scot Stacho closed off the angle, blocking the near-post strike and deflecting it wide.

As the closing minutes of the first half approached, a Marietta foul in its own box granted the Scots a penalty kick in the 43rd minute. Sophomore Austin Russell stepped up and buried it in the lower right corner to take a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Marietta equalized in the 62nd minute as Taylor Reasoner connected on a strike from just outside the 18-yard-box, putting it low and left past Stacho to bring the score level at 1-1.

Wooster's Matthew Kelly nearly regained the lead for the Scots in the 70th minute after a snapping header low and away from the senior appeared to be heading in, but Marietta 'keeper Tyler Sholl dove for a catching save to preserve the tie as regulation came to a close.

Marietta tallied the game-winning goal less than two minutes into overtime after a throw-in cross from Noah Laliberty found the head of Reasoner, who guided it in for the game-winner and his second of the match.

The Scots outshot Marietta 7-6, while Marietta posted six corner kicks to Wooster's three.

Marietta finished with 20 fouls on the game, compared to 10 on Wooster.

The Scots return to action for their home opener on Saturday afternoon as they get set to take on Earlham College (2-3-0) at 2 p.m. as part of Black & Gold Weekend.
