NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The College of Wooster men's soccer team and Westminster College were in a 1-1 tie for most of the game on Thursday until senior Miles Rochester hit the game winner in 82nd minute for the Scots to escape with a 2-1 win.
Rochester came up big for his first goal of the season as the senior found some space and launched a shot that scored in the top-right corner of the goal.
From there, the Scots held on for their second win of the season.
On the scoreboard, the two teams played even throughout as Westminster struck first but only held the lead for less than eight minutes. However, Wooster had plenty more offensive opportunities, outshooting the Titans 20-5.
Wooster also held the corner kick advantage 8-0.
Westminster connected on a free kick from just outside the goal box for the game's opening goal. Connor Schmidt curved his shot around a wall of defenders and scored in the 18th minute.
However, the lead was short-lived as Wooster junior Elliot Miller hit a laser with his left foot in the 25th minute. Miller drove toward the center of the field for an opening and hit the ball well outside the goal box.
Wooster keeper Andrew Beazley made two saves in the win. Westminster's split force combined for 10 saves.
Wooster responds after a 4-0 loss to 22nd ranked Case Western Reserve in their last game out. The Scots move to 2-1.
Westminster, who entered at 0-0-2, almost saw a 1-1 result for the third consecutive game. However, they will leave with a 0-1-2 record.
The Scots return home 1 p.m. Saturday when they host John Carroll University (2-1). The Blue Streaks received votes in the opening United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll to begin the year.
