WOOSTER, Ohio - An 80th minute goal broke the scoreless stalemate between The College of Wooster and Baldwin Wallace University as the Fighting Scots notched a 1-0 non-conference win on Carl Dale Field.
Defense was the mark of the first half for both teams. Baldwin Wallace (4-3-2) kept working the ball into the offensive half of the field and managed to get nine shots off. Wooster (5-2-1) senior goalie Andrew Beazley recorded saves on all three Yellow Jacket shots on goal. Meanwhile, Wooster had three shots find the frame itself, all of which were saved to keep the game knotted at zero at intermission.
Both teams had fewer attempts on frame in the second half, but the Scots finally managed to break through in the 80th minute. Wooster intercepted a pass in their offensive end and strung a couple of good passes from junior Evan Amend to senior Walker Johnson who put the ball in the left corner of the net. The goal marked Johnson's first of the year and the senior is the eighth different Scot to score in 2014.
The Yellow Jackets had a good look at a game-tying goal in the final minute, but Beazley came up with a big save on the Jakob Young shot.
BW held the advantage in shots (15-8) and shots on goal (5-4), while Beazley had a game-high five saves. His counterpart, Diego Teran, had three saves.
Wooster hits the road on Wednesday, September 25, to take on the University of Mount Union (5-3) at 7 p.m. inside Kehres Stadium.
