Urban studies major is member of men's soccer team
Our "Senior Salute" series continues with Mason Garza from the men's soccer team. Garza is an urban studies major from Kirkland, Washington.
Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose Wooster because I wanted to play soccer in school while also getting away from home to develop my own self.
Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: Being a Fighting Scot means you work hard and strive to be a better person on and off the field.
Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Some of my favorite memories are hanging around my team at Lowry Student Center and going up to Cleveland for a teammate's birthday.
Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part is being able to play the sport you love and having a team to keep you focused while you are pursuing your academics.
Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I have joined a lot of club sports during my offseason, including the club volleyball and club soccer teams.
Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Dr. Hamed Goharipour is probably the professor who had the biggest impact on me, because he was the reason I decided to become an urban studies major.
Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: I think APEX was a big help for me as a first-year and sophomore. I struggled a lot academically in the beginning years of college. APEX helped me get my footing so I could adjust to college.
Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My I.S. studies how policy and planning effects the 2026 World Cup legacy.
Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: My team had the opportunity to go to Cape Town, South Africa on an international trip. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am glad I was able to go with my team.
Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: Time management is important. Do not put off work until the last minute!
