Wiley a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Recipient
Men's soccer standout Wooster's 17th selection since 2018
Only two colleges and universities have enjoyed more success than The College of Wooster when it comes to recent NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients. Wooster's impressive run continues, as men's soccer's Max Wiley is one of the NCAA's 21 fall male sport student-athletes set to receive the prestigious $10,000 award. Wiley is Wooster's 17th selection since 2018.
"I am incredibly honored and grateful to be selected for the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship," shared Wiley. "I want to thank my teammates, coaches, and family for their unwavering support throughout my college career and for shaping me as an athlete and a person. The lessons I learned at Wooster will stay with me, and I look forward to applying them in the next chapter of my academic journey."
The senior midfielder was a third-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference selection as a junior after ranking as the team's leader with five goals and 11 points. As a junior, Wiley tied for third in the NCAC with three game-winning goals. Wiley followed that up with a top-three team ranking in points as a senior. He scored and passed out an assist in the NCAC opener against Oberlin College, a performance that netted NCAC Athlete of the Week honors. Wiley scored the lone goal in a season-opening 1-0 shutout of Trine University.
Earlier in his career, Wiley led the team in goals (5) and points (13) as a sophomore and had goals in back-to-back NCAC contests against DePauw University and Wittenberg University. Wiley was Wooster's top newcomer in 2021, ranking second on the team with five goals and 12 points.
The statistical and data sciences major sports a perfect 4.0 GPA in his final year at the College. He earned three College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® certificates, has been on the NCAC Academic Honor Roll each year eligible, and has been a part of the College's Athletic Director's Honor Roll each semester since its inception.
Wiley's Independent Study analyzes the optimal way for NFL teams to allocate personnel funds under the salary cap. Wiley worked as a data analyst intern at Triangle Insights Group by Mercalis, where he built and analyzed a comprehensive database that combined qualitative market access data with quantitative sales data to evaluate the performance of new pharmaceutical product launches. Wiley's previous internship experiences included supporting psychometric and assessment services as an education research intern at SurePeople. Wiley's research at SurePeople was recently published in a case study by the organization. Wiley tutored students in mathematics courses at Wooster High School, studied abroad for a semester in Spain, and was a research intern at CEEK.
Wiley plans to accept a job opportunity as a risk and data analyst and gain a full year of field experience before pursuing a master's degree in applied data science or analytics.
Wiley is Wooster's 31st NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient and third from men's soccer. Wooster's men's soccer's program's other NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients are Andreas Xenofontos (2021) and Wilson Freije (2022).
Of note, only Stanford University and Johns Hopkins University student-athletes have received more NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships than Wooster since the start of the 2019-20 academic year.
