The College of Wooster men's tennis team utilized its
depth for a narrow 5-4 season-opening victory over Malone
University on Saturday, as the Fighting Scots' No. 4 through
No. 6 singles players each won in straight sets and pulled out the
come-from-behind victory.
Trailing by a 4-2 count after Malone swept the top three
singles' matches, the Scots dominated the bottom three
singles' slots. Sophomore Ethan Arenstein prevailed 6-2, 7-6
(4) at No. 4, freshman Matt Hoch gave up just three games at the
fifth spot (6-1, 6-2), and freshman Matt Mandel sealed the match
with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Prior to singles play, Wooster took two of the three doubles
matches for an early 2-1 lead. After the Wooster duo of Arenstein
and senior Pat Grab fell to Malone's No. 1 tandem of Kyle
Bowers and David Cairns by an 8-5 score, the Scots rebounded with
the teams of senior Jeremy Dominik and Hoch edging Malone's
No. 2 team by an 8-4 count. A victory at the third doubles position
came easier for Wooster, with junior Steve Conroy and sophomore
Brad Palanski teaming for an 8-3 decision.
Next for Wooster is the North Coast Athletic Conference opener with
a match at Ohio Wesleyan University (2-1, 0-0 NCAC) on Feb. 25
slated to begin at 4 p.m.
