Wooster Wins Final Match to Go 1-2 at GLCAs

The College of Wooster men's tennis team opened up the Great Lakes Colleges Association Tournament with back-to-back 5-0 losses to regionally-ranked opponents in Hope College and Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, but rebounded in its final match of the tournament with a 6-3 win over Albion College to end the weekend in Crawfordsville, Ind. with a 1-2 mark.

On Friday, Wooster came out on the short end of a 5-0 score with Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member Hope. The Flying Dutchmen swept the doubles competition with a pair of 8-2 scores at No. 1 and No. 3 sandwiched around an 8-1 tally at No. 2, and went on to wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to seal the victory.           

Later that afternoon, the Scots met up with the 14th-ranked team in the nation in Carnegie Mellon, and found themselves on the losing end of a 5-0 decision. The Tartans won matches in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, while the No. 1 team of Pat Grab and Ethan Arenstein putting up a good fight in an 8-6 setback. In singles action, Carnegie Mellon claimed straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles for the win.

Saturday morning Wooster faced another MIAA opponent in Albion College with the Scots prevailing in a 6-3 victory over the Britons. Albion won a tight 8-6 decision at No. 1 doubles before Wooster raced back and secured its first two points of the match, when the teams of Jeremy Dominik and Matt Hoch won 8-4 at No. 2, and Chris Collen and Brad Palanski were victorious by an 8-3 count at No. 3 doubles.             

Grab picked up a crucial point in a marathon of a match at No. 1 singles, winning the first set by a 6-2 score. Albion's Ben Miller, answered taking the second set by a 6-4 count before Grab outlasted Miller in the super tiebreaker via a 13-11 score giving Wooster the point. 

Picking up wins were Dominik at No. 2 (6-3, 6-3), Steve Conroy at No. 5 (6-3, 3-6, 6-2), and Matt Mandell at No. 6 (6-3, 6-1).

The Scots, who are now 12-4 overall, will hit the court next on Thursday at 4 p.m., when they host Tiffin University (1-20) in a non-conference affair.
