With victories in the top three singles' slots, along with the
top two doubles' pairings, The College of Wooster was able to get
past home standing Wittenberg University by a 6-3 count Sunday
afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference interdivisional
matchup inside the Springfield Racquet Club.
Wooster (14-5, 2-1 NCAC East) posted a point in a close match at
No. 1 singles. Senior Pat Grab won the first set 6-2, but lost the
second in a tiebreaker by a 7-4 mark. However, he rebounded with a
convincing 6-2 third-set triumph. At No. 2, Jeremy Dominik eased
past his opponent 6-3, 6-2, and Matt Hoch picked up a point for
Wooster, as he was a straight-set winner, coming out on the
positive side of 7-5 scores in tiebreakers at the conclusion of
each set.
Notching a victory during singles play was Matt Mandell at No. 6,
also going to a tiebreaker after the first set, winning it easily
7-1, and calmly claimed his match with a 6-3 score in the second
set.
At first doubles, Grab and Arenstein teamed up and improved their
record to 11-8 on the spring with an 8-1 decision over their
opponents, while Hoch and Dominik cruised to an 8-2 triumph at No.
2, as the pair moved their record to 13-4 together.
With the loss, Wittenberg dropped to 14-6 overall and remains 3-1
in the NCAC West.
The Scots will close their regular season Wednesday against Denison
University (11-3, 3-0 NCAC West), ranked No. 23 in the latest
Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings. The
match in Granville, Ohio, is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
