In a battle between two North Coast Athletic Conference Eastern
division schools, The College of Wooster men's tennis team fell to
No. 8-ranked Kenyon College by an 8-1 count Saturday in Gambier,
Ohio.
With the win, the Lords moved to 14-7 overall and a 1-0 mark in
NCAC East action, while Wooster slips to 13-5 and 2-1 in the
conference's eastern division.
The Scots' lone point came from freshman Matt Mandell at No.
6 singles, who utilized a 10-7 score in the super tiebreaker.
Mandell won the opening set by a 6-4 score, while Kenyon's
Adam Sendor evened the match with a 6-3 win in set number two.
Unfortunately for Wooster, no one else shared Mandell's good
fortunes, as the Scots dropped the other five singles matches in
straight sets.
At No. 1, senior Pat Grab fell 6-1, 6-1, while classmate Jeremy
Dominik was a 6-0, 6-1 loser at No. 2. Freshman Matt Hoch was
defeated 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, while sophomore Ethan Arenstein (6-1,
6-1) and junior Steve Conroy (6-1, 6-0) fell in straight sets at
No. 4 and 5 positions, respectively.
In doubles, Arenstein and Grab fell 8-3 at No. 1, Dominik and Hoch
were defeated at No. 2 by a similar 8-3 score, while senior Chris
Collen and sophomore Brad Palanski were topped 8-2 at No. 3.
Wooster will look to get back to its winning ways when it makes a
trip to Wittenberg University (14-5, 3-1 NCAC West) in a showdown
Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
