Wooster Goes 1-2 at Annual GLCA Tourney

The College of Wooster men's tennis team won one match and dropped two at the highly-competitive Great Lakes Colleges Association Tournament this weekend, held in central Ohio. After getting shutout by sixth-seeded Hope College in Friday morning's first-round action, the Fighting Scots bounced back later that day for a 5-1 victory over versus Earlham College, and they rounded out the event with a 7-2 setback to Calvin College Saturday.

Against Earlham, Wooster (6-7) opened up a 2-1 lead with doubles wins from Brad Palanski and Sam Susanin at No. 2 (8-5) and Matt Mandell and Steve Conroy at No. 3 (8-0). Mandell and Conroy also scored singles triumphs, with the former putting a double bagel on his opponent at the second spot (6-0, 6-0) and the latter prevailing 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4. Alex Turner helped clinch the match, which was played to decision, by emerging with a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 6.

Hoch and Arenstein grinded out a pair of impressive three-set singles wins in the Calvin match, but it was not enough for the Scots. At the first position, Hoch split the first two sets, each 7-5, and then took a thrilling third-set super tiebreaker 12-10. Ironically, Arenstein and his opponent at No. 3 also traded the first two sets by 7-5 scores before Arenstein cruised in the tiebreak by a 10-2 count.

Also of note, Palanski was a bright spot for Wooster against Hope as he pushed his singles opponent to three sets before succumbing at No. 5 (2-6, 6-4, 6-1).

The Scots return to competition Thursday with a match at Tiffin University (5-11) at 4 p.m.
