OWU Topples Wooster in Consolation Semifinals, Scots Settle for Eight-Place

<a href= The College of Wooster lost a tough 5-4 decision to Ohio WesleyanOhio Wesleyan University in the consolation semifinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Sunday, and struggled to bounce back in the seventh-place match as the Fighting Scots settled for eighth in their final action of the 2010 season.

After falling to WabashWabash College 5-1 on Saturday afternoon, Wooster still eyed a top-five finish with a couple of wins in the back draw. Ohio Wesleyan had the same thing in mind and the teams endured a lengthy battle.

The Battling Bishops grabbed a 2-1 lead through the doubles, with the Scots' point coming at the top of the ladder from Matt Hoch and Ethan Arenstein as they joined forces for an 8-4 win. Noteworthy, the duo also scored a victory in the Wabash match (8-2), and they finished with a season record of 9-7, all at the No. 1 position.

In the singles portion of the Ohio Wesleyan match, Wooster also experienced quite a bit of success at the top of the lineup. Hoch was a double winner, prevailing 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 at No. 1, while Steve Conroy picked up a hard-fought decision at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), and Brad Palanski won more decisively at No. 4 (6-4, 6-1), all of which added up to a 4-4 tie with fifth singles still on the court. The Bishops' Jake Kerosky rose to the occasion with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph.

The somewhat surprising result caused the Scots to go into a tailspin, as OberlinOberlin College took the squads' seventh-place match rather decisively at 5-1. Wooster's lone point that match came courtesy of Palanski, who moved up to No. 3 singles (6-0, retired).

The Scots, who fielded an inexperienced and youthful lineup this spring, end up with an uncharacteristic 6-14 record.
