Zack Hasenyager

WOOSTER, Ohio – Zachary Hasenyager, a member of the nationally-ranked University of Redlands tennis program as both a coach and a player, has been named the head men's tennis coach at The College of Wooster, announced Keith Beckett, Wooster's director of athletics, on Thursday.

"I am elated that Zack has accepted (our) position," stated Beckett. "He has a strong history within NCAA Div. III as a player, coach, and recruiter. His passion, experience, and commitment afford him an ideal combination to build upon the many fine traditions of men's tennis at Wooster."

As a graduate assistant coach at Redlands, an academically selective Div. III school located in southern California, Hasenyager (pronounced HOSS-en-yay-gur) helped lead the Bulldogs to 27 wins the last two seasons while playing a national-caliber schedule that resulted in Intercollegiate Tennis Association final rankings of No. 14 (2013) and No. 21 (2014), and individually, he trained an All-American as well as a number of all-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorees.

With Hasenyager largely responsible for bringing in top-25 recruiting classes, including No. 12 in 2013, according to tennisrecruiting.net, Redlands will likely maintain its status as a national power, and now his goal is to employ those same coaching and recruiting skills to bring Wooster back to similar status. The Fighting Scots had eight finishes in the ITA national rankings from 1983-99 and won four North Coast Athletic Conference championships (1985, 1989, 1990, 1996).

"That's part of what has me excited. It's not like reinventing the wheel, it's trying to get it rolling again," said Hasenyager, 28. "I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to get it going."

Prior to coaching at Redlands, Hasenyager spent three years as a professional tennis instructor at the Bainbridge Athletic Club in Bainbridge Island, Wash., where he developed a program for high-level juniors, ran United States Tennis Association league clinics, and taught the sport to all skill levels among other duties.

Hasenyager was a doubles specialist as a player for Redlands while also contributing in singles during his junior and senior seasons. The Bulldogs qualified for the NCAA Div. III Championships every year (2005-08), and achieved final rankings of No. 5 (2005), No. 7 (2006), No. 17 (2007), and No. 12 (2008).

A standout in the classroom, Hasenyager earned Phi Beta Kappa honors, receiving a bachelor's degree from Redlands with a major in managerial studies and economics, and was a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete. He also completed a master's degree in business administration at Redlands.

In addition to his time on the West Coast, Hasenyager has roots in the Midwest as he resided in Indiana for nine years, graduating from Carmel High School. Also of note, he was born in Hawaii and lived there for nine years.
