The College of Wooster men's tennis team, under the direction of coach Zachary Hasenyager for the first time, officially kicked off its 2014-15 season over the weekend with the Kenyon Invitational, an event that ended up getting weather shortened.

The tournament was broken down into three singles flights and two doubles flights, but no championship matches were played due to Saturday's rain that messed up the schedule.

Wooster entered three players in the singles "A" flight, and freshman Titas Bera served notice with a 6-1, 6-3 win over a competitor from perennial power Kenyon College in his first collegiate match. Bera fell in a close three-setter during the second round, while Harrison Suttle picked up a straight-sets victory (6-3, 6-0) in the consolation bracket of the top flight.

At the "B" flight, Jacob Pine emerged as a 6-1, 6-1 winner during a first-round match and Jack Buchan triumphed in three consolation matches following an opening round setback.

Davis Elkins, Tripp McLane, and Jeremy Miller all won their first matches within the "C" flight.

The doubles highlight for the Fighting Scots was Willy Nelson and Pine edging out their teammates, Buchan and Elkins, by an 8-6 count after each pairing had won a previous match in the consolation draw of the "A" flight. The team of Bera and Suttle also triumphed twice in "A" consolation matches.

Wooster will now prepare for its first traditional dual match of the season coming up on Friday, Sept. 19, against the University of Mount Union.
