Elkins Fights Off Five Match Points as Scots Sweep Capital, Fall to Div. II Tiffin

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's tennis team took to D.J. Hard Tennis Courts for the first time in the calendar year on Sunday afternoon, with the Fighting Scots topping Capital University, 9-0, in the early match of the day before falling to NCAA Div. II opponent Tiffin University, 1-8, in the nightcap.

Against Capital (1-5), the Scots conceded five total games in double play. Seniors Jack Buchan and Davis Elkins defeated Dale Booher and C.J. Martin, 8-1, at the top spot while junior Titas Bera and Jesse DeWitt proved victorious by the same count in the second slot.

Senior Davis Elkins went 2-0 in singles on the day, including a three-set thriller against Tiffin's Elio Lezama after Elkins fought off five match points to win the third set tiebreaker, 15-13.

Wooster (4-4) continued to roll through singles play as five of the six matches ended in straight-set wins, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by first-year Nathan Devereux at No. 5, while DeWitt clinched the match at No. 4, winning 6-0, 6-2 win over John Roberts.

At six singles was junior Andrew Long, who won the first set, 6-3, before dropping the second in a tiebreaker (3). Long rebounded in the third, however, winning the super tiebreaker, 10-4, to complete the sweep.

Against Div. II foe Tiffin (6-1), the Scots dropped all three doubles points but competed well at all spots throughout the match. Down 7-2 at No. 1, Buchan and Elkins won four straight games to battle back into contention before falling, 8-6.

In singles, Elkins was the lone Scot in the win column with a grinder of a victory at No. 3. The senior won the opener, 6-3, and lost the second in a tiebreak, 3-7. In the super tiebreaker, Elkins fended off five match points before winning, 15-13, to cap the match under the setting sun.

Bera contended in a hard-fought battle at No. 2, falling 4-6, 4-6 in a back-and-forth contest, while Buchan tried to overcome a 1-6 first-set loss, but dropped the second, 4-6, to Tiffin's regionally-ranked Andrew Isaac.

At No. 4, DeWitt went down 2-6 in the first before dropping a closely contested second set, 5-7. Devereux and Long each fell in straight sets at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

Next, the Scots travel to Greencastle, Ind. on Saturday, Feb. 25 for matches against Centre College (1-1) and 34th-ranked DePauw University (1-2) at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively.
