Doubles Proves Decisive as Scots Fall 6-3 at Ohio Wesleyan

Jack Buchan

The College of Wooster men's tennis team posted three victories in a competitive singles flight, but a 3-0 sweep in doubles action proved vital for Ohio Wesleyan University's odds as the Battling Bishops – the 16th-ranked team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Region – prevailed 6-3 on Thursday afternoon at the Luttinger Family Tennis Center in Delaware, Ohio.

In doubles, seniors Jack Buchan and Davis Elkins fell 9-7 at No. 1, while junior Titas Bera and sophomore Jesse DeWitt at No. 2 and junior Andrew Long and first-year Nathan Devereux at No. 3 both fell by an 8-4 count.

Bera, whose regional ranking improved to 15th per the most recent ITA poll, went the distance at No. 1 singles, winning 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6). A court below, Buchan won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, while Devereux wrapped up the point earners for the Fighting Scots (6-16, 0-3 North Coast Athletic Conference East Division), winning by retirement after claiming the first set 7-5. Devereux's opponent, Elliot Garwood, retired with the score level at 2-2 in the second set.

At No. 3, Elkins won the opening set 6-1 before dropping the second by the same count. In the third set tiebreaker, Elkins lost 10-5. DeWitt (2-6, 1-6) and Long (2-6, 2-6) fell at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, respectively.

Up next, the Scots return home to face Allegheny College (4-13, 0-2 NCAC East) at 1 p.m. as part of "Parents' Day" for both the men's and women's tennis programs.
