Nathan Devereux

The College of Wooster, which took Div. II Walsh University down to the wire in each of the last two years with each program winning a 5-4 decision, received a well-earned win at third singles by sophomore Nathan Devereux, but the host Cavaliers clinched the match early with a 6-3 triumph over the Fighting Scots in the teams' fall opener on Sunday afternoon at Canton, Ohio.

Devereux warded off four set points during his impressive 7-5, 7-6 (5) win to cap the match on a positive note for Wooster (0-1). Earlier in the afternoon Devereux played a key role in the Scots' first point of the match as the sophomore teamed up with first-year Joaquin Abos Amo at No. 2 doubles, where Wooster won in convincing fashion 8-4.

Wooster senior Titas Bera came through with the Scots' third point on the afternoon. Coincidentally, Bera's singles match featured a meeting of two student-athletes ranked 11th in their respective end-of-year regional rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Bera took charge early and turned in a 6-3, 6-0 win over Walsh's (1-0) Vasily Vidmanov. Notable, the win marked Bera's 50th of his career in singles action.

Further down the singles lineup, Abos Amo won six games in his collegiate singles debut in the fifth flight, four of which came in the second set.

Other matches to note included the first doubles flight where Bera and Jesse DeWitt fell 8-4.

Wooster continues its fall slate at next weekend's Oberlin College Invitational.
