In one of the closest matches this season for The College of Wooster men's tennis team, the Fighting Scots came out on the wrong end of a 5-4 decision against Allegheny College in the seventh-place match of the 2018 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, co-hosted by DePauw University and Wabash College at the Barbara Wynne Tennis Center in Indianapolis, Ind.
Three games separated a potential two-point swing in doubles play, with the Gators (11-8) taking No. 2 doubles 9-8 (3) over sophomore Nathan Devereux and first-year Joaquin Abos Amo in addition to No. 3 doubles, as Allegheny's Jacob Stringer and Mackenzie Knowlton won 9-7 over first-year Jorrit de Rouw and senior Andrew Long.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Titas Bera and junior Jesse DeWitt came out on top, 9-7, as Bera earned his 51st career doubles win, a total tied for 13th all-time in program history.
In singles, Wooster (8-15) picked up wins at No. 1, 2, and 4. Bera earned his 70th career singles win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 1. The standout senior ends his career third in wins at No. 1 (52), sixth in overall singles wins (70), and seventh in combined wins (singles and doubles) at 121.
Abos Amo ended an overall solid first year with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 to finish at 16-9 in singles in 2017-18, and 5-4 at the No. 2 spot. Coming through at No. 4 was Devereux, who topped Allegheny's Mike Siegel 6-2, 6-0.
DeWitt battled to a first-set tiebreaker at No. 3 before ultimately losing 7-6 (3), 6-3, while de Rouw and first-year Saeed Husain each wrapped up their first NCAC Tournament with 6-1, 6-3 losses at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
