NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The College of Wooster men's tennis team capped its weekend in Kentucky with an impressive 6-3 win over regionally-ranked Rhodes College on Sunday afternoon at Top Seed Tennis Club.
Wooster (4-2) took charge in doubles play, and emerged with a 3-0 lead after first-year Alex Drewes and junior Joaquin Abos Amo beat Rhodes' (2-3) Frank Stich and Alex Lloyd 8-6. Sophomore Alon Liberman and senior Nathan Devereux staked the Scots to a 1-0 lead with an 8-5 win at the top flight over Andrew Morton and Daniel Trudell. The Scots' won the second flight 8-4, with sophomore Austin Hanna and first-year Nivaan Lobo turning aside Ritwik Chatterjee and Phil Lauture.
Devereux, who went 3-1 on the weekend, moved Wooster to the verge of clinching with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. The computer science major didn't drop a set in singles play on the weekend.
Abos Amo clinched the victory for the Scots at No. 2 singles. He was down in a tight match to Rhodes' Lauture 6-4, 5-4, but Lauture was forced to retire due to injury.
Hanna was Wooster's other winner in singles. He bounced back from dropping the opening set in the third flight 6-2 to win the next two 6-4, 7-5.
Rhodes entered the match ranked 10th in the Atlantic South Region based on the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
Next, Wooster plays the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (8-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 29 in Delaware, Ohio. The Warhawks are ranked ninth in the Central Region.
