Scot Rewind: Wooster a Co-Champion at Inaugural NCAC Championships

1985 Men's Tennis Team
Wooster captured its first conference title in 1985.

Welcome back to the Scot Rewind, where WoosterAthletics.com is taking a look back at a big win, a monster individual performance, or a significant milestone corresponding with each week of the 2020-2021 academic year. The College of Wooster is one of just three institutions to win a North Coast Athletic Conference title in men's tennis. In fact, the Fighting Scots have three – 1985, 1990, and 1996. Here's a summary of the Scots' NCAC title from 1985, which also marked the first year of competition in the NCAC.

Backed by sweeping the first-place doubles matches, Wooster rallied back to tie Denison University for the conference crown at the 1985 NCAC Tournament. Not only were the Scots the inaugural NCAC champion, but the league crown was also a first for the program.

At first doubles, Bob Savitt teamed up with Gary Peterson for a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Denison's Doug Jones and Bill McLean. Earlier in the tournament, the Scots' top doubles team turned aside Case Western Reserve University's Jim Drougas and John Hixon by identical 6-3 counts.

The championship matches in the second and third flights also came down to Wooster and Denison. At No. 2, Dave Baka and Doug Hart fought off a stiff challenge from Frits Hoffman and Alan Walker 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-1. The Scots clinched a tie when John Raker and Jeff Reiter upset top-seeded Bruce Dawson and Joe Mezera 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Both the second and third flights featured Wooster and CWRU squaring off in the semifinals. Baka and Hart downed Gary Burkhart and Mark Spetsios 6-3, 7-6 (2), while Raker and Reiter won 6-3, 6-4 against Brian Taylor and Suta Utama.

Baka and Peterson were instrumental in Wooster's co-NCAC title, as the duo won their respective singles flights. At No. 2, the top-seeded Baka eased past Burkhart 6-1, 6-4, setting up a showdown with Ohio Wesleyan University's Bob DuBois. After a tight first set went Baka's way, 6-4, the Scots' sophomore put up a strong fight in the second set and didn't drop a game.

Walker had Peterson on the ropes at No. 3 singles, as the Big Red's sophomore cruised to a 6-1 win in set one. Wooster's veteran senior bounced back to take sets two and three 6-4, 6-0.

Raker and Rob Leach picked up key points at Nos. 5 and 6 singles by advancing to their respective flight's championship matches.

Raker, who had an opening-round bye, thanks to being the top seed, rallied back against Spetsios, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, setting up a showdown with Denison's Dawson, who took the championship match 6-4, 6-3.

Leach held off Utama 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in his opening match at No. 6, and then won in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) against Allegheny College's Marc Calderone. In the championships, Mezera got the better of Leach 6-1, 7-5.

Prior to 1990, the NCAC Tournament consisted of six singles and three doubles flights with team points awarded based on individuals' finishes within each flight.
