Johnson Leads Scots at Ashland Invitational

Alon Liberman ASHLAND, Ohio – First-year Patrick Johnson won three matches at the season-opening Ashland University Invitational, and the Adam Clark era of College of Wooster men's tennis is officially underway. The Fighting Scots won seven matches over the weekend.

Johnson didn't drop a set during Saturday's singles action. He dispatched fellow rookie Nick Walters of Ashland 6-0, 6-2 while playing in the sixth flight, and took a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Lawrence Technological University's Patrick Putschbach at No. 5.

Five of Wooster's victories came in singles play against Ashland on Saturday. Senior Alon Liberman took down fellow senior Jordan Phelps 6-4, 6-2 in the first flight. Senior Austin Hanna backed that up with a pair of 6-3 sets versus Omar Prince at No. 2. Further down the lineup sophomore Shivam Dewan kept Tche Kun Teng from getting any traction with a 6-1, 6-2 line at No. 4, while senior Nebyou Minassie rallied in the tiebreaker for a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (6) win over Grant Marzio in the fifth slot.

Johnson and junior Alex Drewes were victorious for Wooster during Sunday's doubles play. They turned away Lawrence Tech's top duo of Alexander Tammaro and Putschbach 6-4.

Next, Wooster has one its two home fall dual matches. The Scots are set to take on the University of Mount Union at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 18.
